What is cleft lip or palate?
In the early weeks of foetal development the right and left sides of the lip and the roof of the mouth normally grow together. Occasionally, however, in about one of every 800 babies, those sections don't quite meet. A child born with a separation in the upper lip is said to have a cleft lip. A similar birth defect in the roof of the mouth, or palate, is called a cleft palate.
Reconstructive surgery for cleft lip or palate
Those born with a cleft lip or palate will require reconstructive surgery to repair the opening of the cleft. However a common problem after reconstructive surgery is asymmetry, when one side of the mouth does not match the other side.

How is the medical tattoo procedure performed?
The consultation
Prior to the procedure the specialist will carry out a consultation to explore the possibilities determining the best shape and colour match for the lips.
Multitrepannic Collagen Actuation
To reduce the prickling sensation topical anaesthetics are always applied to the skin prior to any of the medical tattooing processes.
During the first treatment the consultant will treat the scar that runs from the nose to the lip line with Multitrepannic Collagen Actuation, a specialist medical tattooing technique that softens and flattens the cleft scar.
The pigment infusion process
During the second treatment the desired lip shape is created using a surgical marker and only when the patient gives the go ahead does the cosmetic tattooing procedure commence.
The pigment infusion process normally takes 60 minutes.
A follow up procedure is normally required after a four week period to allow final adjustments to be made to the enhancement and this is included in the initial cost.
